Steven Dentali, Ph.D., has joined Herbalife, Los Angeles, CA, in the newly created role of vice president, botanical sciences. Dr. Dentali will report to Vasilios Frankos, Ph.D., senior vice president, global product science, safety and compliance, and former director of U.S. FDA Dietary Supplements division.
 
Dr. Dentali will be responsible for all activities related to botanicals, including the identification, documentation and validation of the appropriate botanical ingredients, formulations and processes that meet standards and requirements for product quality, efficacy, safety and regulatory acceptability.
 
He joins Herbalife after a 22-year post-graduate career in the U.S. herbal and dietary supplement industry, where he is recognized as a foremost expert, and an authority on botanical product quality issues. He was most recently chief science officer at the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), where he helped to set quality standards for the botanical products industry and provide guidance and advice to AHPA member companies, related organizations, government agencies, scientific publications, and the media.
 
Prior to that, Dr. Dentali held a number of scientific, quality assurance and product development roles for companies such as Rexall Sundown, Inc. and Trout Lake Farm.
 
Dr. Dentali is a member of the U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) Standards Expert Committee: Nomenclature, Safety, and Labeling; a member of the USP Expert Panel of Elemental Impurities; and chair of the Dietary Supplements and Herbal Medicines Nomenclature Subcommittee. He is also editorial board chair of AOAC International; an advisory board member of the American Botanical Council and the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia; and he also chaired the Product Quality Working Group of the National Advisory Council for the Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health from 2005 to 2007.
 
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Human Nutrition from the Evergreen State College, Olympia, WA. He also holds a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences, with a Natural Products Chemistry specialization, from the University of Arizona, where he was the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education Edwin Leigh Newcomb Memorial Fellow.
